Thanks Tom, yes. Strangely though, despite knowing what you say is true, nevertheless my intuitions want to treat XML as if it’s a String.

It’s not just XML. Any objects with properties are also modifiable. IIUC it’s the reference that’s a constant – you can’t make DATA point to anything else.
